Steering shimmy is defined as a forced vibrational phenomenon of a standard steering system at less than 20Hz. Currently, no computer aided engineering software fully supports this important engineering issue. This paper presents a bond graph model of the suspension and steering system as a means to investigate the underlying mechanism of steering shimmy. Special consideration is given to the moment about the steer axis due to longitudinal and lateral disturbance forces in addition to the gyroscopic torque due to vertical perturbations. Finally, friction is considered as a design specification for shimmy isolation.
